An alleged Mexican drug trafficker awaiting trial in a Chicago federal court claims that the notorious Sinaloa cartel received weapons from “Operation Fast and Furious” under an alleged immunity agreement that the U.S. government made with cartel leaders, in exchange for information on rival gangs. While filling in as guest host for Rush Limbaugh on Thursday, Mark Steyn said the 2012 election will be the most consequential in our lifetime because it will determine whether Obamacare can potentially be repealed. If Obama wins reelection, said Steyn, the third wave of statism – the first wave was FDR’s New Deal  and second wave LBJ’s Great Society – will be complete and America will never be able to pull itself out of a socialist welfare swamp.

Last week, the FBI released its preliminary crime statistics for the first half of 2011, and across the nation violent crimes dropped 6.7% while property crimes dropped 3.7%. This continues a downward trend that dates back to the 1970′s.

Many of the violent crimes reported this year have been sensational.  Representative Gabrielle Giffords and Federal Judge John Roll were targeted by a lone, crazed gunman and there were a number of other gruesome crimes. The Giffords/Roll shooting was brought to an end by a bystander. The Ft. Hood massacre on November 5, 2009, which killed 13 American soldiers and wounded 29 others was brought to an end by two base police officers using conventional sidearms and procedures. The warning signs for this terrorist attack, the first on American soil since 9/11, were ignored and yet it was the local cops on the beat who faced and dealt with a terrible crime.

Every case one can think of was resolved by conventional methods.  And yet the police powers of government on a local and national level have been growing at an alarming rate.  And despite a dissonant data base there is a growing trend towards militarization of police forces and of an invasive state security apparatus. On the 15th of December, the English version of the Russian newspaper Pravda published a stunningly accurate portrayal of the results of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack and included a frightening warning:  Does that [an EMP attack] seem like science fiction? It’s not. In fact, it may be right around the corner.”

The article proceeded to explain who the target would most likely be:

“. . . it’s almost a given that some power or group might get put out with the behavior of the U.S.A. and decide to go this route. . . . If Americans knew about this very real possibility, they might utterly panic. It is up to them to make their government stop angering others, tell the government to mind their own business, take care of the home front and stop interfering all over the globe. . . . Perhaps they ought to close the bases, dismantle NATO and bring the troops home where they belong before they have nothing to come home to and no way to get there.”

Back to business: The President and First Lady, accompanied by Admiral Robert Willard, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, and his wife Donna, attend the memorial

KAILUA, Hawaii, Dec. 30 (UPI) — President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited the USS Arizona Memorial, a shrine to Americans killed in the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Traveling in a motorcade of more than a dozen vehicles, the first family stopped for shave ice at Island Snow in Kailua, a customary stop on the president’s Hawaiian itineraries. About 60 people stood in the parking lot and on the sidewalk near the shop, many of them taking photos of the president.

Just before 5:30 p.m., the president and first lady — accompanied by Adm. Robert Willard, head of U.S. Pacific Command in Hawaii, and Willard’s wife, Donna — visited the USS Arizona Memorial. The Obamas observed a moment of silence in the shrine room, where the names of 1,177 Arizona crew members who were killed in the Dec. 7, 1941, attack are inscribed.

The Obamas dropped white and purple orchids into the sunken battleship. The president did not make a statement at the memorial.

Paul DePrey, superintendent of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument — which includes the Arizona Memorial — said every president since the memorial has been open has visited. He said President Obama has visited in the past, including 2008.

It’s not surprising that President Obama’s re-election strategy is to “cast himself as a middle class warrior.” What is surprising is that he thinks he can get away with it. The fact that he actually might says less about Obama than about Americans’ understanding of economics and the Republicans’ particular skill at turning smart policy into stupid politics.

The obvious question when a politician wants to run as a champion of any particular group is “what has he done for that group?” So, let’s think about what Obama has done for, or — more precisely — to, the middle class.

ICE

WASHINGTON — As part of a broader effort to improve our immigration enforcement process and prioritize resources to focus on threats to public safety, repeat immigration law violators, recent border entrants, and immigration fugitives while continuing to strengthen oversight of the nation’s immigration detention system and facilitate legal immigration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) today announced new measures to ensure that individuals being held by state or local law enforcement on immigration detainers are properly notified about their potential removal from the country and are made aware of their rights.

The new measures include a new detainer form and the launch of a toll-free hotline — (855) 448-6903 — that detained individuals can call if they believe they may be U.S. citizens or victims of a crime. The hotline will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by ICE personnel at the Law Enforcement Support Center. Translation services will be available in several languages from 7 a.m. until midnight (Eastern) seven days a week. ICE personnel will collect information from the individual and refer it to the relevant ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Field Office for immediate action.

The new form also includes:

• A request that the law enforcement agency (LEA) provide the subject of the detainer a copy of the detainer form and includes a notice advising the subject that ICE intends to assume custody. The notice informs these individuals that ICE has requested the LEA maintain custody beyond the time when they would have otherwise been released by the state or local law enforcement authorities based on their criminal charges or convictions. The notice also includes Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese and Vietnamese translations.

• Further emphasis that LEAs may only hold an individual for a period not to exceed 48 hours (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays). It also advises individuals that if ICE does not take them into custody within the 48 hours, they should contact the LEA or entity that is holding them to inquire about their release from state or local custody.

• Directions for individuals who may have a civil rights or civil liberties complaint regarding ICE activities.

• The new form allows ICE to make the detainer operative only upon the individual’s conviction of the offense for which he or she was arrested.

• The new form makes clear that the existence of a detainer should not impact or prejudice the individual’s conditions of detention, including matters related to the individual’s custody classification, work or quarter assignments.

An immigration detainer (Form I-247) is a notice that DHS issues to federal, state and local LEAs to inform them that ICE intends to assume custody of an individual in the LEA’s custody and to request that the LEA notify ICE as soon as possible prior to the time when LEA would otherwise release the individual.

Detainers help ensure that individuals who are convicted of criminal charges or have previously been removed are not released back into the community to potentially commit more crimes. Detainers are critical tools in assisting ICE’s identification and removal of criminal aliens, immigration fugitives, illegal re-entrants, recent border crossers and others who have no legal right to remain in the United States.

We’re back to Michelle Obama, and as much as I hate to say it yet again – it’s all about the double standard.  Here we have a woman who preaches financial abstinence, but whose personal expenditures are promiscuous beyond belief.  Mrs. Obama is a harbinger of ‘safe-spending’ and then uncontrollably prostitutes herself on the altar of sartorial elegance and sumptuous living.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29 (UPI) — A plan by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to visit allies in Latin America is a threat to U.S. national security interests, a U.S. lawmaker said.

Ahmadinejad is to visit Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Ecuador in January.

U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R.-Fla., chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, described Ahmadinejad’s itinerary as a “tour of tyrants.”

She said Iran has defense and “other schemes” planned with “dictatorships” in Latin American that are meant to harm the United States.

“Iranian activity in the Western Hemisphere threatens regional security and stability,” she said in a statement. “It is important that we join forces with other democracies in the region to counter and prevent further Iranian inroads in the hemisphere and root out the threat posed by Iran, its proxies, and others who seek to do our nation harm.”

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Ahmadinejad are strong allies. Chavez in recent statements speculated that his bout with cancer might be part of a plot by the United States to cripple Latin American leaders.

Ahmadinejad’s trip comes as Western allies consider new sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program.

WASHINGTON — It is a strange series of crimes — young women slashed on their rear ends as they shopped at area malls.

Now, the man who police think is responsible has turned up in another country.

“We did receive information a couple of weeks ago that he is possibly in Peru,” says Lucy Caldwell with Fairfax County Police.

That’s where suspect Johnny Pimentel is originally from.
