EL PASO – A man convicted for his role in a scheme to buy hundreds of guns and illegally export them to Mexico last year was sentenced Tuesday to 46 months in federal prison.
Osvaldo Tostado Gonzalez, a Mexican national, pleaded guilty for his role in an effort to purchase about $2 million in firearms that prosecutors contend were to be illegally exported to Mexico.
Tostado and his co-defendant, Gabriel Gonzalez, provided undercover agents with a list requesting firearms that included 300 AR-15 or AR-16 rifles, 300 short barreled .223 rifles, two 40 millimeter grenade machine guns and 10 .45 caliber hand guns with silencers, according to a criminal complaint.
Tostado in December provided undercover agents with a green duffel bag filled with $148,045 as a down payment for the firearms. He argued that he had no knowledge of the bag’s contents and was paid $100 for its delivery.
