Up to 10,000 visitors Saturday are expected to flock to Fort Bliss for Armed Forces Day, where the addition of several new units at the post is expected to bolster the number of military displays at the annual event, officials said.

"It’s going to be a nice cool day and so we expect that the community will really come out this year," said post spokeswoman Jean Offutt, adding that people can expect to see tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles among the many attractions.

The free event is from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Noel Field and includes family entertainment, food and plenty of information about the units and organizations that are based at Fort Bliss.

Armed Forces Day is part of 2008 Freedom Fiesta events that began Saturday with a Soldier Appreciation Picnic at Biggs Park. Freedom Fiesta continues through July and includes ceremonies and community activities for the military.

For Judi Palmer, a trauma program coordinator at Beaumont Army Medical Center, Saturday offers her and many others a chance to share information about being safe and healthy.

"It’s a lot of work but it’s exciting because we know that everything we do benefits the community," she said about participating in the 10th annual Armed Forces Day Health Fair at the Religious Activity Center near Noel Field.

The health fair includes screenings for high blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol.

Still, Palmer and her husband plan to steal away for a few moments to catch a few Armed Forcesexhibits and taste the flavors from a chili cook-off Saturday.

The 62nd Army Band and country music singer Katelyn each will perform throughout the event that includes historical tours of the post, a drill team competition and car show featuring hot rods and muscle cars.

Re-enactments of the Salt War of 1877 and Billy the Kid breaking his friend out of jail will be performed by the Desperados of San Elizario. The uprising in San Elizario for control over a nearby salt mine resulted in the arrival of Buffalo Soldiers at Fort Bliss and more activity for the post.

Plus, children can get a glimpse of military training by rappelling from a tower, a popular feature during the event, Offutt said.

"That’s always a big treat for the kids," she said.
