The US Air Force plans to replace the wings on its oldest Fairchild A-10s, in a move to keep its fleet of 356 of the ground-attack aircraft operational until 2028. The rewinging programme will follow the Lockheed Martin-led Precision Engagement (PE) avionics upgrade now under way.

"We are in the process of putting together a request for proposals," for the rewinging effort, says Col Jim Ratti, A-10 system programme manager, with production deliveries to begin in fiscal year 2010. The replacement wings will be based on the "thick-skin" design used in late-production A-10s, he says. [more]

An enraged dolphin has been terrorising the French Atlantic coast for several weeks, attacking boats and knocking fishermen into the sea.

"He’s like a mad dog," said Henri Le Lay, president of the association of fishermen and yachtsmen of the port of Brezellec, in Brittany.

"He has caused at least 1,500 euros ($2,530) worth of damage in the past few weeks."

The dolphin, named Jean Floch, has destroyed rowboats, overturned open boats, flooded engines and twisted mooring lines.

Two fishermen were knocked into the sea after the dolphin overturned their boat.

Jean Floch has been a popular and familiar sight along the coast of Brittany since 2002.

But experts say that he must have been excluded from his group recently to have turned so violent.

According to Sami Hassani, of the Oceanapolis Department of Sea Mammals, "because of their dominant personalities and their sexual maturity, males could become dangerous."

POITIERS, France, Aug 10, 2006 (AFP) – A deer that sowed terror in a village in central France for several days — charging and badly injuring a 71-year-old woman — has been tracked down and shot, the local mayor said Thursday.

The hot-headed herbivore, a one-year-old male, was spotted late Wednesday by a jogger who had been attacked by the deer earlier in the day.

A local ranger, alerted of his whereabouts, hunted him down, the mayor of Anche François de Lauzon told AFP.

The hunt for the rampaging animal started on Sunday after it charged the elderly woman on a country path, badly injuring her legs and arms, before chasing a group of eight-year-olds heading for a swim in a nearby river.

"It was probably a tame fawn, who was either released or escaped from captivity, but was still seeking out a human presence. Maybe he just wanted to play," suggested the mayor.

"It’s sad it had to come this, because the real monster was the person who tried to rear the animal for his own pleasure," he said.

SOUTHBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 29 (UPI) — A Massachusetts couple’s marriage got off to a rocky start after the groom was arrested at the wedding reception.

Southbridge, Mass., police said 24-year-old Deric Gendron of West Brookfied, Mass., was arrested Sunday night in the parking lot of the Knights of Columbus hall where the wedding reception was taking place. Witnesses said Gendon had gotten into a fight after accusing one of the guests of groping the bride. Police said he made matters worse by allegedly kicking one of the arresting officers, the Boston Herald reported.

Gendron was released on bond but arrested later that night for calling the bride to get a divorce, which violated a restraining order she took out on him after the first arrest, the newspaper said.

Gendron was charged with assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest and disturbing the peace.

Old Glory stamped on in protest by backers of illegal immigration.

 Backers of illegal immigration at a rally near Los Angeles took down an American flag at a U.S. post office, stamped on it and replaced it with a Mexican flag as police looked on, according to witnesses and a video of the event.

Police officers in Maywood, Calif., Saturday eventually came to the pole to remove the flag but had bottles and rocks thrown at them, a radio listener named Sandra reported to the Terry Anderson show, heard on KRLA in Los Angeles.
