WASHINGTON (CNN) — Peace activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Tuesday in the House gallery after refusing to cover up a T-shirt bearing an anti-war slogan before President Bush’s State of the Union address.
“She was asked to cover it up. She did not,” said Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, U.S. Capitol Police spokeswoman, adding that Sheehan was arrested for unlawful conduct, a misdemeanor.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail, Schneider said.
Schneider said shortly after the State of the Union speech that Sheehan was still being held but should be “out sometime tonight.”
Sheehan was an invited guest of Rep. Lynn Woolsey, D-California, who has called for a withdrawal of troops in Iraq.

Tom Fox wrote the day before he was abducted, : “We are here to stand with those being dehumanized by oppressors (read: U.S. and coalition forces) and stand firm against that dehumanization. We are here to stop people, including ourselves (read:Westerners), from dehumanizing any of God’s children, no matter how much they dehumanize their own souls.”

The Iraqi CPT mission statement notes that “the primary focus of the team for eighteen months following the invasion was documenting and focusing attention on the issue of detainee abuses and basic legal and human rights being denied them.”

From: http://powerlineblog.com/archives/012987.php As the Democratic Party continues its slide into disrepute, there doesn’t seem to be any bottom in sight. Here is the latest smear from the Dems: candidate Coleen Rowley has published a despicable slander of my own Congressman and friend, John Kline, depicting him as a Nazi. Click to enlarge:

rowleyklineasnazi.jpg

In a sane world, the pathetic Ms. Rowley would be forced to resign from the race in humiliation. That won’t happen, however, as this kind of ridiculous smear is exactly what the Democratic Party is looking for in its candidates. The more outrageous, the better. Here is Congressman Kline’s response to Rowley’s smear: Dear Mrs. Rowley, It has come to my attention that you have placed on your campaign website a doctored photo of me in which my military uniform has been replaced by a Nazi uniform. I demand that you immediately remove from your website that outrageous and disgusting insult to me, my family, and every man and woman who has ever worn a military uniform in defense of our country. No one knows better than I the rough-and-tumble of a political campaign, but we owe it to the voters not to cross the line of civility, respect and common decency. With regard to each of these, you have clearly crossed the line by portraying me as a Nazi. I demand a personal apology from you, as well as an apology to every veteran. Your attempts to smear my good name and 25 years of honorable service in the United States Marine Corps by equating me to a Nazi shows a lack of perspective, a lack of seriousness, and a lack of good judgment. You should be ashamed of yourself. Sincerely, John KlineMember of Congress - Minnesota’s 2nd District. Don’t hold your breath. Far from being ashamed, my guess is that Rowley’s Nazi slur will increase her fundraising from the Democratic faithful.

Al-Jazeera: Carroll urges release of female Iraqi prisoners
Tuesday, January 31, 2006

(CNN) — In new footage aired Monday on an Arabic-language news network, an American journalist kidnapped in Iraq urged Americans to plead for the release of female Iraqi prisoners in order to secure her release, the network said.
Appearing distraught, Jill Carroll wore a head scarf and spoke English in the video, which was dated January 28, the Qatar-based satellite network Al-Jazeera reported. The network broadcast the images but did not air the sound.
It said that Carroll urged her family, colleagues and Americans around the world to appeal to U.S. officials and the Iraqi Interior Ministry on her behalf.
Last Thursday, the U.S. military in Iraq released five female detainees after determining they were not security threats. Four female prisoners reportedly remain in U.S. custody.
The tape was dated January 28 and bore the logo of the Brigades of Vengeance, the group that claimed responsibility for Carroll’s January 7 abduction. CNN has no way to confirm when or where the video was shot.

Why would Jill Carroll (who goes by the name Zainab in Iraq) appear in this new video wearing a hijab? Is Carroll trying to send a message to her comrades (?) Carroll has been pushing for the release of all Iraqi female prisoners held by U.S. and coalition forces for a few years and what she says in this latest video (in which she asked for the release of all Iraqi female prisoners), is no different than what she has been saying before she was allegedly kidnapped. It’s a common mantra for Carroll and her comrades to accuse the U.S. military of systematic rape and torture of Iraqi female prisoners. Likewise, al-Jazeera is notorious for accusing the U.S. military of raping and torturing prisoners and… torture and murder of Iraqi people in general. Carroll’s close friend Natasha Tynes is a former (?) employee of al-Jazeera. Nevertheless, whether Carroll is truly innocent in her (alleged) abduction or not, what we do know is, she is guilty of aiding and abetting enemies of America. Recall Marla Ruzicka (Carroll’s friend) met her fate by the very “enemies of America” that she aided and abetted. Will Carroll meet with the same fate? To where Carroll might be, I wonder…could she be in Jordan with her comrades?

Banning al-Jazeera (first posted August 19, 2004)

By Erick Stakelbeck & Ali Babingyi
Last week, thanks to decisive action by Iraq’s interim government, the U.S. took a significant step toward winning the ever-elusive hearts and minds of the Iraqi people. Iyad Allawi, Iraq’s acting prime minister, announced that al-Jazeera — the Arab world’s one-stop shop for Islamist, anti-American, and anti-Semitic propaganda — would be banned from operating in Iraq for 30 days.
Accusing the Qatar-based network of “inciting hatred,” Allawi said that an independent panel had evaluated al-Jazeera’s Iraq coverage and concluded that the station advocated violence against both Coalition and Iraqi security forces.
The al-Jazeera shutdown came just days after the French government declared that it was banning al-Manar, the official television network of the terrorist group Hezbollah, from French airwaves “due to its anti-Semitic content.”
As expected, both networks loudly protested the closures. Al-Jazeera argued that it had only recently implemented a station-wide “code of ethics” that would ensure balanced reporting on Iraq. In turn, a representative from al-Manar labeled the French ban “restrictive” and a violation of “liberty and principles.”
Considering that both stations serve as sounding boards for Islamist terrorists who advocate the destruction of the U.S. and Israel, it’s rather difficult to sympathize with their plight.
Disturbingly, since its inception in 1996, Al-Jazeera has served as the foremost source of information about the West for much of the Arab and Muslim world. The station helps shape the worldviews of an estimated 45 million Middle Easterners, in addition to scores of Arabic-speaking Europeans and 150,000 American households.
And therein lies the problem: Al-Jazeera portrays the United States and Israel as twin Satans while casting jihadists and despots as courageous victims of Western aggression.
Al-Jazeera has drawn the frequent ire of the Bush administration for its skewed coverage of Iraq, which Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has labeled “vicious, inaccurate, and inexcusable.” For instance, in violation of the Geneva conventions it has showed footage of the interrogations of captured U.S. soldiers. Plus, American troops in the field are portrayed as arrogant imperialists who intentionally target Iraqi civilians and holy sites.
The station has also broadcast several audio and video communiqués from Osama bin Laden, Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, and other terrorists. But it never reveals how it obtained the tapes.
To make matters worse, for post-tape commentary and analysis, Al-Jazeera often turns to two notorious Al-Qaeda sympathizers, Muntasir Al-Zayat and Abd al-Bari Atwan.
The Cairo-based Al-Zayat has worked as a lawyer for a number of Islamists with terrorist ties. Utwan, who is editor-in-chief of the radical Arabic newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi, once referred to bin Laden as “a legitimate jihad fighter.” So much for impartiality.
Additionally, the weekly al-Jazeera program, Ash-Sharia wa Haya (”Sharia and Life”), has played host to well-known jihadists like Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, an avowed advocate of suicide bombings; Safar Al-Hawali, a Saudi cleric with ties to Osama bin Laden and the 9/11 hijackers; and Muhammad Husayn Fadlallah, spiritual leader of Hezbollah.
While Al-Manar may not yet enjoy the same name recognition as al-Jazeera, its pro-terrorist message does manage to reach an estimated 200 million viewers worldwide via satellite. Al-Manar regularly airs programs that glorify suicide bombers, including one that shows Palestinian “martyrs” preparing for suicide missions. It also broadcasts frequent footage of Hezbollah terrorists attacking Israeli soldiers.
In recent months, the network ran a Syrian-produced mini-series, Al Shatat (”The Diaspora”), which was based on libels found in the notorious anti-Semitic tract, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The series depicted Jews in Israel plotting a world takeover. One typically outrageous scene showed Jewish leaders engineering the murder of a Christian boy in order to drain his blood for Passover matzah.
Given the increasing number of violent attacks against France’s Jews by the country’s burgeoning Muslim population, is it any wonder that the French government decided to ban a station that propagates such incendiary anti-Semitic rhetoric?
Despite its setback in France, however, al-Manar remains a thriving operation, with bureaus already established in Dubai, Egypt, Iran, and Jordan — and is planning to open another in Britain.
As for al-Jazeera — which, just last month, was cleared by the Canadian government to begin broadcasting in Canada — it continues to gain mainstream acceptance. An August 9 New York Times editorial lauded it as “a healthy and crucially important force for change,” and the network even had a skybox at the recent Democratic National Convention.
Indeed, the positive measures taken by the Iraqi and French governments seem to have had little effect on the global standing of either al-Jazeera or al-Manar. As a result, the pro-terror propaganda machine rolls on, much to the West’s disadvantage.

GAZA CITY (AP) — Masked gunmen on Monday briefly took over a European Union office to protest a Danish newspaper’s publication of cartoons deemed insulting to Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, the latest in a wave of violent denunciations of the caricatures across the Islamic world.
The gunmen demanded an apology from Denmark and Norway and said citizens of the two countries would be prevented from entering the Gaza Strip.
“We are calling on the citizens of the two countries to take this threat seriously because our cells are ready to implement this all over Gaza,” one militant said.
The 12 drawings — published in September by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten and republished in a Norwegian paper this month — included an image of the prophet wearing a turban shaped as a bomb with a burning fuse.
Islamic tradition bars any depiction of the prophet, even respectful ones, out of concern that such images could lead to idolatry.
The cartoons have touched off protests, flag burnings and boycotts of Danish products throughout the Muslim world. On Sunday, Palestinian protesters burned Danish flags in two West Bank towns.
In Monday’s violence, the gunmen burst into the EU office, then withdrew several minutes later. A group of about 15 masked men, armed with hand grenades, automatic weapons and anti-tank launchers, remained outside, keeping the offices closed. No shots were fired, and there were no reports of injuries.
The gunmen left the building after about half an hour.
The Al Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, a violent group linked to Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah Party, claimed responsibility. Al Aqsa has been involved in much of the recent chaos plaguing Gaza.
Jyllands-Posten has refused to apologize for the drawings, citing freedom of speech. The drawings were reprinted on January 10 by Norwegian evangelical newspaper Magazinet in the name of defending free expression, renewing Muslim anger.
